History:

This staircase was built after the construction of the new municipal road, now known as Estrada Cónego Camacho [named after Manuel Francisco Camacho (1875-1970), an important clergyman born in Curral das Freiras].

In 1957, when the first road to Curral das Freiras - the district road between Eira do Serrado and the centre of the village - was being built, Câmara de Lobos Municipality decided to build a branch road to the church. In 1958, financial support was requested from the State to carry out the work, and in 1959, the long-awaited access to the centre of the village was completed.

In 1960, the parish priest of Curral das Freiras asked Câmara de Lobos Municipality

to build a staircase from the municipal road to the parish churchyard, a request that was granted.

Around 2007, the old staircase ceased to be the preferred access between the main road and the parish churchyard, due to the construction of the new Civic Centre staircase between the churchyard and the square built on its roof. But it remains as a record of the arrival of the first road to the centre of Curral das Freiras.
